Mad Scientist Day

MAD SCIENTIST DAY
NOVEMBER 4, 2005

Students received some spooky insight as to how weird and fun science can be at the first annual Mad Scientist Day sponsored by the Science Department. The day was full of goo and gore, which added to the Halloween Spirit! The science teachers dressed as “mad scientists” and hosted the event within four classrooms. Mrs. D’Armond’s class included floating eyeballs, make your own Frankenstein monster, skeletons, and body parts of animals. Ms. Hughes made a “Doody Monster” which was a concoction of sulfuric acid and sugar, she burst some specialized hydrogen/oxygen balloons, and performed an oscillating iodine reaction that would turn purple, gold, and clear right before the students’ eyes! Mrs. Coleman was shocking in the Electricity Room that showed lemons producing electricity, a glowing pickle, a crushed can, a Van de Graff generator that stood her hair up, a Tesla Coil that mildly shocked students, and plasma balls that produced electrical fields. Finally, Mrs. Drinnon amazed the students with liquid nitrogen, dry ice, and wiggly worms! She made spoons sing, flowers freeze, canisters explode, and eyeballs spin! Students toured the rooms on a schedule (organized by Mrs. Allen) while answering questions on a handout related to each scientific concept. Who knew science could be so exciting and scary at the same time?
